Abstract

In the face of a growing incidence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection India has established an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) research center that will eventually become incorporated under the Indian Council of Medical Research. The research center is located in Madras capital of the state of Tamil Nadu. The majority of Indias 200 HIV-positive cases emanate from Tamil Nadu where 1 new case is currently being detected each week. The research center will coordinate surveillance and epidemiological work as well as conduct virological and immunological research. It will also be the only facility in India for the treatment of AIDS victims. 1 of the centers research projects will focus on the role of the retrovirus-like intracisternal A-particle recently isolated from a prostitute with atypical seroresponse to HIV and a possible precursor to HIV. Also to be investigated is the possibility that mycobacteria widely present in India may be protecting Indians against AIDS and could play a potential role in vaccine development.
