Abstract

The need for sex education, counselling and HIV awareness training for young people with severe learning difficulties is discussed in relation to changes in community care over recent years. A qualitative evaluation of two sex education programmes which include HIV awareness is presented using verbatim transcripts of observed sessions. The involvement of nurses in such programmes and the relative merits of the two approaches observed are discussed.
