Abstract

Just over a decade ago Susan Sontag had cancer. It was seeing the reactions to the disease, which often included disgust and a kind of shame, which inspired her to write Illness as Metaphor. In the intervening period, people's attitudes to cancer have changed, it has become less of a stigma. Part of the reason for this change is the advent of AIDS, and hence AIDS and Its Metaphors. While there are many similarities between the way cancer and AIDS are spoken about, there are also some important differences, according to Ms Sontag’s view of things. Like cancer, AIDS can be seen as an invasion; unlike cancer the transmission of AIDS owes more to the metaphors of syphilis, those of contamination.
