Abstract

It has been said that in Africa heterosexual intercourse is a documented mode of transmission of the AIDS virus, the implication being that it is just a matter of time before the disease will spread throughout the world in this manner. As with so many other medical reports, I would recommend this one be viewed with strong skepticism. Cultural differences must be taken into account.... [T]he data I gathered concerning heterosexual intercourse in Africa show marked differences from the way it is usually practiced in the United States.... [M]any men in Africa take their women in a brutal way, so that some heterosexual activity regarded as normal by them would be closer to rape by our standards and therefore be likely to cause vaginal lacerations through which the AIDS virus could gain entry into the bloodstream.'
