Abstract

In MC, OCIS and MED AOM divisions, different approaches have been developed to investigate the research question of Artificial Intelligence (AI) value. The three divisions recently collaborated during a pre-AOM conference on AI at Harvard University and during a PDW on AI during AOM annual meeting in Boston. During these events, the three divisions discovered that they have been conducting independent streams of research on AI value. More precisely, how is AI value approached in each division? In OCIS division, this AI value is investigated through the concepts of hidden work related to AI, material-discursive apparatus for practical evaluation of AI, or process-oriented approach for evaluating the business value. In MC division, one of the most promising approach to investigate AI value seem to be related to hidden costs and Socio-Economic Approaches to Management and their connection to organizational development. Beyond cost and benefit calculations, the future of management education may be at stake with AI. The way business schools will be able to catching competitive advantage relies in a great extent on the way they may take the lead on AI, renew their role, and include AI in their MBA/MSc and DBA classes and programs. This symposium, chaired by the representatives of the different divisions aims to compare these different approaches to AI value. Each of these presentations will be discussed by discussants also coming from different divisions. The three AOM divisions included in this symposium would have future opportunities for publications, consulting and education that would address professional challenges that AOM members face. Unfortunately, these divisions currently lack platforms where they may compare their approaches. Consistent with AOM 2014 strategic objectives, an all-academy symposium would be an important step to facilitate cross-Division collaboration and learning about best practices by broadening our sights to AI value.
