Abstract
If the advent of flexible manufacturing systems and the dream of unmanned factories are to be combined, there will be plenty of opportunities for applying artificial intelligence. A factory can be looked at as an organism comprising cells, which can be interconnected as a sequence in any way. AI techniques can then be applied to the movement of components through the manufacturing cells and to the configuration of the cells, both externally and internally.
