Abstract

Aguadilla, PR Paige Quiñones (bio) August 2015 Only men sit at the fountain, eyeingmy sister’s legs & my exposed neckfrom across the square.Women on the doorstep of the ferreteríaask for money, spit gringas at our backswhen we clench our teeth & do not comply.A shaded couple trades a stampof heroin for money—an exchange, palmagainst palm, that ends as quickly as it begins:a shy kiss, an oar dipping into water. There are no children here.We were children here once.We still photograph the ocean sunsetand pocket the brightest intact shells,as if this is the place we remember. Streets are now lined with empty homes; every ceiling, caved & rotting, is webbed with nests & vines. The sea will make her way inside.
