Abstract
The driving force that drives the manufacturing and industrial development of Elche since 1890 is water. The appropriation and management of this scarce asset, characteristic of Mediterranean ecological systems, is the foundation of a new economic sector, that of "light factories". This business opportunity will attract a new local bourgeoisie that leads the transformation of the city, first by spreading electric lighting throughout the municipality, second, facilitating the machining of the industry, and third, enabling the lighting of homes, so that social change supposes the transformation of life and work.
