Abstract
On July 13, the Pennsylvania State Board of Education voted to approve science standards that endorse the teaching of evolution in science classes in Pennsylvania's public schools. The measure passed by 13 to 2. Three legislative members of the board abstained from voting, because the state legislature votes on the standards later this year.AGU's Committee on Public Affairs and other groups had issued a legislative alert about these standards. The concern was that proposed revisions that had been inserted in July contained subtle language that some people said could open the door for creationism proponents to teach “alternatives to evolution.”
