Abstract

AGU was born 80 years ago as an organization designed to serve the geophysics community in the United States. Since that time, the Union has become so successful in fulfilling its mandate that its membership has grown to over 36,000 geoscientists. AGU's greatest successes have been in providing its members with outstanding journals in which to publish their research results and top flight meetings in which to present those results to their colleagues. AGU has been so successful in serving these two needs, that over the years increasing numbers of scientists worldwide have chosen to become members of the Union. In recent times, the number of members in AGU from outside the United States has climbed to over 30% of the total and this has caused the leadership of the Union to begin to carefully examine how it can best serve Earth and Space scientists worldwide.
