Abstract

Axelsen, B. 1979. Agriculture, population density, and income differentials in two rural areas of Sri Lanka. Norsk Ceogr. Tidsskr. Vol. 33, 83–100. Oslo ISSN 0029-1951. Sri Lanka's Five Year Plans aim to increase self-sufficiency in rice and to reduce food imports through the development of large irrigation schemes in the sparsely populated Dry Zone. Relatively less attention has been paid to the possibilities of improving agriculture in the traditional rural areas. In this article, agricultural resources and living conditions in a rice-growing area and an area of shifting cultivation are compared. Future expansion of food production through alternative use of the land is discussed with reference to population and ecological conditions.
