Abstract

The social and economic history of the late Choson period has been the subject of intensive study since the 1960s. In explaining the economic progress of the period, economic historians have focused particularly on ‘native developments’ of various kinds, and although it seems clear from existing research that this period — the period of the decline of medieval Korea — brought forth what we call ‘modern’ society, many other problems still await exploration. Agriculture, which can be called the motor of this period’s progress, and demographic developments are two areas especially in need of further study, while the life circumstances of the people of late Choson is another topic that has yet to receive sufficient attention.
