Abstract

The major objective of this paper was to discuss and review the historical evolution of agricultural research system in Nigeria. It examines the Agrarian Structure and Land Tenure System & Assess Funding & Financial Management of Research Institutes. Secondary data was collected from various sources and used for the study. The major conclusions drawn from this paper are that emphasis on research infrastructure should not be on building new empires like new research institutes but on creating training facilities and work environment which can make Nigerian researchers self reliant. The paper recommends some strategies to address various problems and identified areas which should be given priority.
