Abstract

The aim of this article is to approach what appears to be the physical contour and extent of the land recovered for agricultural use at the heart of the area falling under the influence of five monasteries situated on both banks of the River Sil in the stretch immediately preceding its flowing into the mouth of the Mino during the 14th and 15th centuries. It will also focus on the various agrarian practices used in chestnut and vine cultivation as well as work on the lands growing cereal crops. These are practices which in the relative system of cultivation will have an effect on the physiognomy of the agrarian lands throughout this period.

Fisonomía del terreno cultivado

El espacio condiciona los actos del individuo y estos modifican a su vez este espacio o territorio en su beneficio. El espacio histórico que se estudiará a lo largo de las siguientes líneas se circunscribe al territorio ribereño situado en el curso final del Sil desde Parada de Sil hasta su desembocadura en el Miño en Os Peares y el tramo del cauce medio de este último río desde este mismo punto, a poca distancia ya de su paso por Orense, hasta las tierras de O Saviñao y Chantada. También es preceptivo un acercamiento a las prácticas de cultivo, como indicador a tener en cuenta en lo relativo tanto a la capacidad del campesinado para domeñar las tierras, en su afán de ocupar parte de ese espacio agrario, como a dotarlas a su vez, a través de los diferentes sistemas de cultivo empleados, de su semblante característico
