Abstract

During the period 1986–1988 a cross-sectional study was carried out in 79 group homes for persons with mental handicap in two provinces of the Netherlands. One of the key questions of this study was whether there are differences between younger and older adults with mental handicap in Dutch group homes for residents with mental handicap. concerning prevalence of diseases and sensory handicaps, mobility, motor skills and social functioning. Results indicated that there is a positive relationship between age and certain sensory handicaps and chronic diseases, as well as the co-incidence of certain health problems. Authors present commentary on need to anticipate changes in character of group homes to the aging of the resident population.
