Abstract

Previous studies on neuroendocrine feedback control have shown that normal pituitary-thyroid function depends on appropriate hypothalamic regulation. Yet, mechanisms leading to low thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in face of low thyroid hormone levels in senescent animals remain to be elucidated. In this study, TSH response in the aging rat was investigated following immunological blockade of endogenous thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH). TRH blockade in aged rats was not accompanied by the striking reduction in TSH levels observed in young animals. Our data suggest that the normal regulatory functions of endogenous TRH on TSH secretion are altered in the aging rat.
