Abstract
Using acrylamide gel electrofocusing, several bands of pyruvate kinase activity were found, corresponding to “M” bands; the isoelectric points of these bands differed according to the zones of rabbit lens: four bands were seen in the epithelium (where protein synthesis is active), and only two bands in the core of the adult lens (where there is no protein biosynthesis). On the contrary, the four bands exist in the lens core of 12-day-old rabbits. Kinetic results and thermostability experiments confirmed that the bands of the adult lens core correspond to the “M 1” and “M 4” isozymes. It seems that the disappearance of certain molecular forms of pyruvate kinase may be due to their shorter life-span. These modifications may have some physiological or pathological consequences.
