Abstract

Aging effects in submarine optical cables were evaluated with OTDR measurements along 24 years’ time span. Logarithmic trend curves indicate a Lifetime of <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\sim $ </tex-math></inline-formula> 75 years before penalty reaches the threshold value of 0.005 dB/km. Penalties from splice losses were found to be twofold higher than those from fiber attenuation. Aging effects in warehouse stored spare cables were tenfold higher than in deployed cables.
