Abstract

Aging of a dental Ag-Pd-Cu alloy with low gold content was investigated by optical microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, and x-ray diffraction. Following quenching, the alloy was aged in the temperature range from 200° to 500°C. A marked increase in hardness was ascribed to the ordering of the silver-rich f.c.c. solid solution into an ordered f.c. tetragonal phase of AuCu I type. A decrease in hardness which was observed at the higher aging temperatures was the result of disordering of the tetragonal phase.
