Abstract

A number of water-soluble anionic disazo dyes have been synthesised, the position of the solubilising groups (—SO 3 −) indicating amphiphilic properties. The (Na) mono- and di-sulphonates exhibited lyotropic liquid crystalline phases whereas tri-sulphonates crystallised normally. The dyes were examined in detail by spectrophotometry and polarisation microscopy and binary (dye/water) phase diagrams constructed. Structures for the observed phases are suggested and discussed in relation to amphiphilic surfactant behaviour and their importance in dye solid separation processes mentioned briefly.
