Abstract

In Amano and associates' article (Am J Ophthalmol 137:988–992, June 2004) about age-related changes in corneal and ocular higher-order aberrations (HOAs), the authors, who used the Topcon KR-9000PW, reported that in 75 normal eyes, corneal and ocular coma and ocular spherical aberration increased with aging but that changes in corneal spherical aberration did not correlate with aging. This topic was also addressed in two of our previous publications, 1 Wang L. Dai E. Koch D.D. Nathoo A. Optical aberrations of the human anterior cornea. Surprisingly, Amano and associates did not compare their findings regarding corneal HOAs with our data, even though our study was published earlier than the study about ocular HOAs 2 Wang L. Author replyAmerican Journal of OphthalmologyVol. 138Issue 5PreviewWe thank Drs. Wang and Koch for their interest in our article. As they state, we should have cited their paper,1 in which the distributions of corneal higher-order aberrations and their variations with aging were investigated. As shown in Figure 6 of our article, two eyes showed large negative corneal spherical aberration. Although slit-lamp examination revealed no abnormality in these eyes, these two eyes appear to be outside the normal range with regard to corneal spherical aberration and should have been excluded from the study.
