Abstract

In this paper, we present a traffic information and condition analysis system (TICAS) that can generate ‘customized’ traffic information from both real-time and archived detector data. TICAS has been designed such a way that the data needs of the drivers as well as the traffic system operators can be addressed in a common architecture. The processed information from TICAS can be relayed to the mobile end users in real time via road side unit agent or directly over the wireless communication systems. Two significant contributions of this presentation are 1) a traffic analysis system architecture that utilizes both archived and real-time data for on-line mobile end user applications, 2) an efficient infrastructure tailored for the wireless V2I communication that can convey user-specific information to drivers. We demonstrate the proposed system by using the data collected from the freeway detection system in Minnesota, USA.
