Abstract

In this paper, we propose an Agent based Spider-Net Information Gathering (ASNIG) scheme to facilitate high performance and energy efficient data gathering, and multipath routing in wireless sensor networks. This algorithm uses a spatio-temporal topology called as ‘Spider-Net’, which is inspired by the way that a spider catches its prey using its own web. Multiple software agents are used to improve the performance of the network. The proposed scheme is simulated using NS2 for performance analysis. The simulation result shows that the networking structure of spider-net along with software agents performed better than that of existing scheme in terms of minimizing energy consumption thereby enhancing the network lifetime of WSN. To test the performance of the proposed system, some of the performance parameters considered are: network lifetime, spider-net construction time, data gathering time, energy consumption for spider-net construction, and energy consumption for data gathering.
