Abstract

The critical moment for European security in the wake of Russia's aggression against Ukraine has altered the strategic environment and forced the Atlantic Alliance to rethink its position. Its new strategic concept to be adopted in 2022 in Madrid is marked by this historic event. However, this new strategy is in turn guided by the NATO 2030 Agenda, adopted in 2019, which establishes a series of guiding principles: unity, collective defence, resilience, safeguarding infrastructure and technological superiority. Thus, this strategic essay aims to reflect on this process in order to make the Alliance and NATO key players in the defence of the international security order. To this end, it analyses the key elements of this environment and how the organisation intends to respond to these challenges, which has direct and potential implications for Spain.
