Abstract

In this article, we briefly outline and explain Roderick Chisholm's theory of agent causation, critically evaluate certain criticisms of it advanced by Harry Frankfurt, Clifford Williams and Irving Thalberg, and show that theory can be improved by elaborating it in two ways, one of which is suggested by work of Richard Taylor. Chisholm frames what he labels the metaphysical problem of human freedom as follows:
