Abstract

Twenty years from now, there will be at least 100 million older people in Europe. The number of European disabled people is also on the increase. The European Union is tackling these challenges in a number of ways, for example, by supporting advanced technological research and development initiatives into issues affecting older people and disabled people. This paper focuses on the European Commissions efforts to empower disabled and elderly people, and to improve their quality of life through the work of the Telematics for Integration of Disabled and Elderly people initiative (TIDE). Here, we describe recent research initiatives and success stories in the field of assistive technologies and information and communication technologies. Finally, we outline the next stage – the Fifth Framework Programme – of European funded research in this field.
