Abstract

Differences in specific trehalase activity and soluble protein were related to tissue-type, age, and sex of Manduca sexta moths. Trehalase activity in thoracic muscle and salivary glands was correlated with feeding, flight, and oviposition activity. Ovarial, testicular, and male accessory gland tissues showed only slight age-dependent changes in trehalase activity. The soluble protein concentration in thoracic muscle, testes, and male accessory glands varied only slightly with sex and age. Malpighian tubules and salivary glands showed a marked increase in soluble protein during the first part of adult life but the concentration then decreased.
