Abstract

Patterns of tooth size reduction were evaluated in a sample of 202 living Lengua Indians from the Chaco area of Paraguay. The preliterate status of older individuals provided a useful base for comparisons with younger age groups who had been increasingly exposed to Western foodstuffs. A definite trend towards tooth size reduction in younger Lenguas was demonstrated. Canonical and stepwise discriminant analyses isolated statistical significance of this trend to the maxillary postca nine teeth, suggesting that upper and lower teeth have different phylogenetic stabilities.
