Abstract

Maintaining one's balance requires the integration of the somatosensory, visual, and vestibular systems. Age-related decline in one or more of these systems limits the sensory information received, resulting in delayed perception and reaction to a loss of balance. This paper reviews age-related changes in various sensory systems and the integration of the systems in relation to postural control. Suggestions for fall prevention in older adults based on the sensory integration research are provided.
