Abstract

Profile of any disease entity alters with changes in epidemiologic, immunologic, racial, geographic, demographic and chronologic variables. Though the skeletal pattern of disease remains the same, many variable factors influence its course, prognosis and management. Though diphtheria has been virtually eradicated from western countries, it is still prevalent in India. Since Bombay is representative of urban population of India, the age profile study of diphtheria cases in Bombay should speak for the All-India urban population. The present study was undertaken to observe the changing pattern of diphtheria in its various aspects in different age groups in a susceptible pediatric population. 3,453 children suffering from diphtheria and admitted to Kasturba Hospital for Infectious Diseases were included in this study during the 3–year period 1970, 1971 and 1972.
