Abstract

Abstract Potassium-argon biotite ages for silicic tuffs in Kyebum Formation (Cretaceous) near Naseby, Central Otago, and biotite-ignimbrite in Shag Point Group (Late Cretaceous) near Palmerston, eastern Otago, are 105–107 Ma and 101–103 Ma, respectively. The two localities thus give evidence of mid-Albian (mid-Cretaceous) subaerial volcanism in Otago. These rocks may correlate with similar silicic volcanic rocks (107–112 Ma) in Ohika Formation (Cretaceous) in the Lower Buller Valley, North Westland.
