Abstract

SUMMARY (1) A curve showing the relationship between dry eye lens weight and age was obtained from a sample of 199 known-age coypus. Lenses were fixed in 10% formalin then dried for 22 h at 80 'C and weighed to an accuracy of 0-1 mg. (2) 119 of the animals in the sample were well nourished in small outdoor pens and 80 lived in a 18 ha enclosure of natural habitat with an impoverished food supply. Fat and liver indices showed that the penned animals were in significantly better condition. (3) A multiple regression analysis using sex, nutritional status, litter size, lens fixation time and lens weight as regressor variables showed there would be little improvement in the prediction of age by taking into account any variables in addition to lens weight.
