Abstract
Data are presented which show that changes in the colour of the paracallosal skin of female gelada baboons (Theropithecus gelada) are age-dependent. Variations in the quality and dispersion of the fluidfilled vesicles that border the female's chest patch during oestrus are also shown to be age-dependent. The physiological mechanisms that underlie these changes and their adaptive significance are discussed.
