Abstract

With age, the function of the sinoatrial node (SAN; pacemaker of heart) deteriorates. We have investigated the effect of age on the ion channels responsible for the funny (HCN4) and Na+ (Nav1.1 and Nav1.5) currents in the SAN. Extracellular potentials were recorded from right atrial preparations including the SAN, isolated from seven 3-month-old and five 24-month-old rats: in the older animals, the leading pacemaker site was more inferior (in young it was 1±0.3 mm from superior vena cava and in old 2.4±0.4 mm) and the spontaneous cycle length was significantly greater (24%).
