Abstract

One distinguishing feature of elder abuse in comparison to other forms of domestic violence is the high prevalence of financial exploitation. Indeed, some studies suggest that this may be the most common subtype of elder abuse. In this presentation I will review the epidemiology of financial exploitation of older adults including the factors driving this growing phenomenon including age dependent rates of dementia, social isolation and loneliness among older adults, and aggressive marketing of products and services to the elderly.
