Abstract

This analysis illustrates two ways in which the family system mitigates the social dependency burden: (1) through the extension mechanism (i.e. through the addition of nonnuclear members to the nuclear household): and (2) through the increases in family labor supply. Results show that the presence and labor-force activity of nonnuclear members through the family life span varies systematically with changes in the support demands fostered by changes in the size and age composition of the family household.
