Abstract

AGATHOSMA BETULINA (BERG.) PILLANS - WILD BUCHUThe leaves of AGATHOSMA BETULINA (Rutaceae) have been used for a long time by indigenous South Africans as a traditional remedy for the treatment of kidney- and bladder-disorders, fluid retention and inflammations. The essential oil, prepared by steam distillation of the leaves and known as “Cassis flavour”, consists of a high proportion of monoterpenes, especially monoterpenoid hydrocarbons and ketones. Beside the essential oil, flavonoids have been isolated from the leaves. Recent pharmacological studies demonstrate antioxidative, weak antimicrobial and also anti-inflammatory effects in vitro. First toxicological in vitro studies show DNA damages and pro-oxidative effects for certain leaf extracts.
