Abstract

This chapter evaluates Vatican City, BAV, MS Vat. lat. 4953. This document contains a theological refutation of several extracts taken from the Marguerite Porete's The Mirror of Simple Souls, compiled as a list of errors. The chapter begins by discussing how the text in MS Vat. lat. 4953 might fit into that broader landscape of hostility. It argues for the potential origins of this list in an inquisition against the Mirror conducted in Venice in 1437 and that it also likely had connections to debates between the Greek and Latin churches at the Council of Florence in 1439. The chapter then examines the contents of the list itself, detailing the arguments and sources that were used to denounce the Mirror's doctrine.
