Abstract

In order to improve the critical current density ( J c) of Bi-2223 sintered bulk, silver (Ag) wires of 0.2 and 0.4 mm in diameter were composed into the bulk. The composite was prepared by stacking alternately the calcined powder and Ag wires, and then sintered at 840 °C for 50 h. The results of the scanning electron microscope observation showed that good c-axis oriented and dense structure of Bi-2223 plate-like grains could be formed around the interfacial region between Bi-2223 oxide and the Ag wires. The J c values of the composites at 77.3 and 4.2 K were higher than that of the sample without Ag wires. The J c values improved with increasing the pieces of Ag wires corresponding to the diameter of the Ag wire. The improvement of J c values was dependent on the contact area between Bi-2223 oxide and Ag wires.
