In the 1964 National Service Act, introduced compulsory National Service for 20-year-old men and selection of conscripts was based on date of birth. Conscripts were obligated to two years continuous full-time service, followed by three years on the active reserve list. The full-time service requirement was reduced to 18 months in 1971. 2. The left-leaning ALP won the federal elections in 1975, after 23 years of conservative rule under the Liberal–Country (now National) Party Coalition, which had enthusiastically supported the American war in Vietnam. The ALP was led by Gough Whitlam, who became Prime Minister.
