Abstract

During the preparation of the first part of the Orchidaceae for the 'Flora of Tropical East Africa', that dealing with the tribe Orchideae only, it was decided to include a conspectus of the larger genera such as Habenaria. This necessitated a considerable amount of investigation at sectional level and much of this has already been published by V. S. Summerhayes in this series of papers on African Orchids in the 'Kew Bulletin' and elsewhere. The following notes will complete the picture as far as East African Habenaria is concerned, but it must be emphasized that work on a world-wide monographic scale would almost certainly alter the names of some of the sections known to occur in Africa.
