Abstract

cal FBT has turned away from the FinnoSwedish modernism of the Twenties and moved in a new direction. The outstanding names in this group of poets are Claes Andersson, Lars Hulden, and Mauri tz Nylund. Characteristic of Finnish literature in the Sixties is also the Lapualaisooppera by Arvo Salo. The name intentionally recalls Brecht, as does the play itself and its music (by Kaj Chydenius). But the subject is purely Finnish. The Lapua movement arose in the early Thirties, being half fascist and strongly nationalist in character. The mentality of brute force that it stood for is sharply attacked by Salo in his play. It is not accidental that Salo has also written pacifist protest songs, as have several other writers, for example Vaino Kirstina, the gifted young prose-writer MarjaLeena Mikkola, and Matti Rossi, who can be credited with the best Finnish poems about Vietnam.
