Abstract

Globally, rates of malaria mortality have fallen by more than a quarter since 2000, and by about a third in the WHO African region.1 Nevertheless, there were an estimated 216 million cases of malaria in 2010 and some 655 000 malaria deaths, 91% in Africa.2 Although mortality rates have fallen, these gains can be threatened by various factors, including the ability of malaria parasites to develop resistance to antimalarial drugs. Therefore, vector control programmes in countries affected by malaria call for comprehensive mosquito suppression methods.
