Abstract

AbstractHepatic disorders caused by ingestion of aflatoxin contaminated feed were described in pigs and ducks. Hepatosis was seen in high proportion of pigs. Experimental studies were conducted in pigs by feeding aflatoxin for a period of three months. There was reduction in feed intake, growth rate and hepatosis. As a result of immunosuppression induced by aflatoxin, pigs developed mange infection. The pathological features of hepatosis encountered in spontaneous cases and experimental cases were described. In ducks as a result of consumption of dietary aflatoxin hepatosis, hepatoma, hepatocellularcarcinoma, cholangiocellular carcinoma were recorded. Tumours in the air sac independently and concomitantly with hepatomas were seen. Detailed histological and histochemical features of the neoplasms were studied. The importance of aflatoxin contaminated feed in causing severe economic loss by way of hepatosis and reduced feed consumption and growth rate was pointed out.
