Abstract
Although satellite pictures of forest cover in India have shown the severity of deforestation, little has been done to stop the problem. An analysis of the existing situation and possible policy interventions indicates that deforestation will continue if only marginal changes are introduced. Unless comprehensive policy and strategy reforms are implemented, farming capability and soil systems will be irreversibly degraded. There is a need for both drastic structural change and organizational reform in land use mangement for existing land, and a package of measures to recover degraded land and reduce land use conflicts.
