Abstract

The article focuses on affirmative action (AA) and the stigma that employees who benefit from AA are incompetent. The article mentions a study where male and female managers of a large insurance firm were provided with data concerning hypothetical computer programmers including information such as employee photographs and hiring information. It states that women with the hiring office notation “Hired through Women/Minority Recruiting Program” were rated as less competent as men and women who were not hired through the recruiting program. It suggests that affirmative action programs have resulted in a subtle form of discrimination against the people these programs are meant to help.
