Abstract

Abstract Catamarcaia, described from the mid-Arenig of Argentina as a pteriomorphian bivalve with palaeoheterodont affinities by Sanchez & Babin (1993), has a morphology which allows it to be interpreted as the earliest known member of the Subclass Neotaxodonta. In turn this indicates that the origin of the Pteriomorphia was from the Neotaxodonta, rather than the reverse, as previously imagined. It is now possible to untangle the evolution of the Subclasses Neotaxodonta, Pteriomorphia and Heterodonta.
