Abstract

This chapter proposes that workaholism and work engagement are distinct types of Heavy Work Investments (HWI) with very different work and nonwork behaviors. It reviews the literature on workaholism and work engagement. The chapter introduces an affect-based theoretical model that proposes types of HWI possess unique negative and positive characteristics. It describes the motivations behind the types of HWI and how motivations toward work are related to very different state-based affective reactions. The chapter discusses how state-based affective reactions to HWI influence work and non-work behaviors and consequences and how relationships are partially mediated by job attitudes and work perceptions. It provides suggestions for future research and practice. The chapter outlines a theoretical framework that details different work and non-work behaviors and consequences for types of HWI.
