Abstract
We experience positive emotions when our hedonic needs, such as virtuosity or relatedness, are satisfied. Creating art is one way of satisfying these needs, so artistic computer applications can be considered as 'affective'. Artistic brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), which allow people to create art using brain signals, are such computer applications. Therefore, they can be considered as affective BCIs. In this paper, we provide an overview of artistic BCIs and discuss how affective BCIs can be used to create art and have hedonic experiences. Then we provide some guidelines for developing affective artistic BCIs.
