Abstract

Scholars suggest that moods and emotions developed to fulfill important interpersonal functions. Yet, until recently, the majority of research examining affective phenomena has focused on the intrapersonal origins and effects of affect in organizations. The purpose of this symposium is to showcase new theory and research on the intersection of affect and interpersonal dynamics in organizations. The papers that comprise this symposium highlight the important interpersonal origins of affective experiences in organizations, as well as how affective experiences and expressions shape interpersonal encounters and relationships. As a group, the papers provide a comprehensive view of the intersection of affect and interpersonal dynamics at multiple levels of analysis (individual, group, organizational) and across a range of interpersonal phenomena (norms, interpersonal encounters, interpersonal relationships, interpersonal perception).
